Background:
I grew up an Army brat, oldest of five, and lived in Virginia, Germany, California, Hawaii and Utah, but returned to Northern Virginia for high school. Ed and I met at the University of Virginia as members of the service fraternity APO. I taught math at Lexington High School in Virginia while he completed law school at Washington and Lee. Then we lived in Baltimore for 10 years.
Our daughter, Shannon, has autism and we moved to Chapel Hill in 1992 when she was 5 years old to take advantage of the state’s autism services and the town’s excellent schools. Shannon lives at Murdoch Center in Durham county and we visit with her frequently. Kevin graduated from Appalachian State and works as a recreation supervisor in Cary. He worked at the Farm for many years as he earned his degree in Recreation Management. Jim is a psychiatrist with UNC Hospitals. He and his family returned to Chapel Hill in 2016. His wife, Lindsay, was a teacher for five years at Ephesus Elementary with the autism program, and was named the Autism Society of NC Teacher of the Year, before she chose to be home with their new son.
Having my grandchildren return to Chapel Hill motivates me to run for the BOCC, District 1, to advocate for our schools and use my twelve years’ experience on the CHCCS Board of Education to benefit the county’s residents. As a long time resident, I am committed to making sure Orange County is a wonderful place to live, with a strong and diverse economy, progressive environmental policies, and a strong safety net for those in need.
